about

We were sitting in the parking lot at Socotra Airport when Abdullah Saheed Suleyman Al-Butm showed up: one last poet to squeeze in a few verses before our departure. His first poem is about his love towards the countryside and the rustic lives of his countrymen. The poem goes on to describe their daily and nightly activities. His second poem is about the annual Socotra poetry competition, in which the island's best poets compete by reciting verses (such as those recorded here) for an adoring crowd. The thrust of the poem is that, although poets may leap to exceed and eclipse one another in the competition, they are all ultimately Socotri.
