about

Qasrhir is a tiny village along Socotra’s northeast coast. Abdullah bin Tali and his fishing family live here at the water’s edge, where he is a third-generation judge and imam of the local mosque. We arrived just before sundown, as bin Tali was due to perform the call to prayer. Having missed the opportunity to record it from the minaret, he graciously agreed to recite it for the microphone as we sat in darkness by the sea. His brother Khamiss and a band of friends performed a concert of Islamic drumming thereafter.

The text of bin Tali’s recitation will be familiar to anyone with a basic knowledge of Islamic prayer:

Allahu Akbar (God is great)
Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah (I bear witness that there is no god but the One God)
Ashadu anna Muhammada Rasool Allah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of God)
Hayya 'ala-s-Salah (Hurry to the prayer)
Hayya 'ala-l-Falah (Hurry to success)
Allahu Akbar (God is Great)
La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but the One God)

Bismillaah hir-Rahmaa nir-Raheem (In the name of Allah, the most Kind and the most Merciful)
Alhamdul lil-laahi rab-bil 'aalameen (Praise is only for Allah, Lord of the Universe)
Ar rahmaa nir-raheem (The most Kind, the most Merciful)
Maaliki yawmid-deen (The master of the Day of Judgement)
Iyyaa-ka na'budu wa iyyaa-ka nasta'een (You alone we worship, and to you alone we pray for help)
Ihdinas siraatal mustaqeem (Show us the straight way)
Siraatal Ladheena an'amta 'alayhim (The way of those whom you have blessed)
Ghay-ril maghdubi 'alayhim (Who have not deserved your anger)
Walad daal-leen. Ameen. (Nor gone astray. Ameen)

He then continues with the iqama salah, which is the call to prayer said inside the mosque just before the formal salat.
