about

On our last night in Socotra, we received an invitation to a party being held in the dunes outside Hadibo by a group of dignitaries from the United Arab Emirates, who were about to break ground on a local hospital. They had hired a South African-descended Soqotri band to perform throughout the night. The band comes from the village of Suq (Sheq); they sing in Arabic and play the mizmar (a double-reed wind instrument), as well as a double-sided drum known as the tabl. Only three of the five musicians were noted: Ghareeb Abo Saleh, Saoud bin Noos, and Mohamed Ahmed Rageb.
